  15. Fighting Crime Doesn't Pay

  17. <p>     When San Francisco taxi driver Holden Charles Hollom saw a
  18. mugger knock down a Japanese tourist and grab her purse, he
  19. drove off in hot pursuit and pinned the suspect against the wall
  20. with his cab, breaking the man's leg.
  21. </p>
  22. <p>     The mugger, Ocie McClure, was found guilty of robbery and
  23. sentenced to 10 years in prison. But then he filed a damage suit
  24. against Hollom. Earlier this month a jury found that Hollom used
  25. excessive force in making a citizen's arrest and ordered him to
  26. pay McClure $24,595.

  28. <p>     The verdict provoked a swift outcry from crime-exhausted
  29. San Franciscans. Although Hollom's employer, the Luxor Cab Co.,
  30. promised to cover all his expenses, a local radio station
  31. launched a fund-raising drive on his behalf. Within a week more
  32. than $25,000 had been collected; the surplus money will be
  33. donated to a victims' relief fund. Says Hollom: "I would do
  34. exactly the same thing again."
